Streaming platforms have become a significant complement to traditional theatrical release, offering Indian films, including regional and independent productions, a route to audiences well beyond what physical distribution alone could reliably reach. For smaller films especially, a streaming release can provide access to viewers a limited theatrical run would likely never manage to find.
Rather than simply replacing cinemas, streaming has created a genuinely layered ecosystem, where a film might open theatrically before migrating to a platform, or occasionally launch directly online when a theatrical release seems commercially impractical for its scale, budget or intended audience. Each path carries different implications for a film's visibility and eventual reach.
For audiences outside India, streaming has also meaningfully expanded access to regional cinema that previously depended entirely on festival programming or diaspora theatrical releases to be seen at all. Understanding this shift helps explain why viewers today can encounter a far wider range of Indian film than earlier generations were ever realistically able to access.
