A film publicist manages a production's public visibility, coordinating press coverage, interviews and promotional appearances to build awareness and anticipation ahead of a film's eventual release to the general public and to secure ongoing media attention throughout its theatrical run once that release finally arrives on schedule.

This work requires balancing a production's promotional needs against journalists' and outlets' own editorial priorities, since a publicist's effectiveness depends on genuine relationships built over time with the wider press and entertainment media, rather than on any single, isolated promotional campaign tied to just one particular film or release.

Though rarely visible on screen, a skilled publicist can meaningfully shape how a film enters public conversation, securing coverage that reaches audiences well beyond a film's core existing fan base. Recognising this role helps explain why some films seem to dominate media conversation ahead of release while others receive comparatively limited attention despite comparable merit.
