Film societies have a long, well established history in India, operating as membership based groups dedicated to screening and discussing cinema outside standard commercial distribution channels, often championing international art cinema and challenging domestic work that mainstream theatres would rarely otherwise programme or show to a paying general audience.
These societies played a genuinely significant historical role in shaping several generations of filmmakers and critics, providing rare access to international films at a time when such exposure was otherwise difficult to obtain through any other channel, well before streaming or even home video existed.
