Beyond its major national showcases, India hosts a dense network of smaller, regional film festivals, many organised around a specific state's language and cinema, giving local industries dedicated platforms that a broader national event could never fully accommodate on its own within a single programme.
These festivals often serve a curatorial function that commercial distribution does not: championing debut directors, honouring a region's cinema history, or simply gathering a community of filmmakers and audiences who share a specific linguistic and cultural context that a pan India event would otherwise dilute considerably, given its far broader national remit and focus.
For a regional industry, a dedicated festival can matter enormously, offering visibility, critical conversation and a sense of collective identity that helps smaller or more experimental films find an audience they would otherwise struggle to reach through ordinary commercial release alone, without any festival support behind them at all to carry them forward.
