Festival programming relies on a specific vocabulary that can confuse newcomers approaching it for the first time. A world premiere means a film's very first public screening anywhere, while an international premiere refers to its first screening outside its country of origin, each carrying different prestige within festival circles.
Films are also grouped into categories: competition sections vying for awards, out of competition slots for high profile work not seeking a prize, and sidebar programmes built around theme, region or format, such as documentary, short film or debut feature showcases specifically curated for newer voices entering the field.
Knowing this vocabulary helps audiences read a festival programme more meaningfully, understanding not just what a film is about but where it sits within a festival's structure, and what that placement might suggest about its ambitions or the confidence a festival has placed in it from the very outset, before a single frame screens.
