A festival's poster functions as its visual signature, distilling an entire programme's identity, tone and ambition into a single striking image used across all its marketing, signage and official promotional materials throughout an entire festival's full public run and season each and every single year it is held.

Designers working on festival posters must balance artistic ambition against practical legibility, ensuring the design remains genuinely recognisable across formats, from large outdoor banners down to small digital thumbnails displayed on a phone screen, while still capturing something distinctive and memorable about that particular year's specific programme, tone and curatorial direction.

Over time, a festival's poster designs can themselves become a minor but genuine object of interest, tracked and compared by dedicated followers year on year as a visual record of the event's own evolving identity and creative direction. Noticing these design choices offers a small but genuinely rewarding way into festival culture beyond the films themselves.
